You’ve dreamed of this dress your whole life, and now you actually got to wear it and it was amazing but what to do with it now?  Traditionally brides have dry cleaned then preserved the dress in a storage kit never to be seen again unless you happen to have a child some 18 years later who might want to try it on and possibly wear it for their wedding. The big question now is, what to do with your wedding dress after the big day? But modern times and creative minds have us looking at some other really cool options we’d like to share with you.

Let’s talk numbers first, how much did that wedding dress cost you?  On average people spend $500-$3000 on the dress alone, then you have alterations, veil, headpiece, jewelry, shoes, undergarments, etc. This all adds up so we as brides try to find other uses for at least the accessories so that we can wear them again and get our money’s worth.  So what else can we do, put it on a mannequin with a glass case around it in your living room so you can look at it….haha but let’s be honest when or where would you ever wear a wedding dress again? So we dry clean it after which could cost up to a couple hundred dollars up to $1000 depending on the size, material, and embellishments.  Most bridal shops or cleaners have preservation kits big bulk boxes displaying your gown for you to find space to store and that could cost $150-$300. It’s really hard to think about not keeping it, after all you spent your whole life envisioning it and really wish you could enjoy it more. So let’s dive into some alternatives for what to do with your wedding dress after the big day.

If you would really like to be able to wear your dress again there are several ways to you can re- purpose your dress.  Here are some really cool ways to make it wearable again:

*Have it tailored into a slimmer shorter dress that you can wear again for your anniversary or special events.

*Have it tailored into a jumpsuit that you can wear on a night out.

*Have the top and bottom separated to make a blouse and skirt set or separates.

*Use a small portion or scraps from redesigning it into patches for jean jackets and other DIY projects.

If you would like to pay it forward you could donate your dress to an organization that helps low income brides, soon to be brides of Veterans, or couples facing terminal illness.  Here are some great organizations to check out.  

Brides Across America – This amazing charity helps US military brides by giving them free wedding dresses.

Wish Upon A Wedding – Donate your dress to Wish Upon a Wedding and help couples facing terminal illness celebrate their dream wedding or vow renewal. 

Fairytale Brides on a Shoestring – This is a nonprofit bridal boutique that provides reduced price bridal gowns and accessories for underprivileged women. 

If you’re looking for other ways to repurpose your dress into other items, there are many people that could enjoy pieces of it, check out these neat ideas:

• Make a christening or baptismal gown for your child or a close friend or relatives child.
• Uses pieces of it for a memory blanket or pillow that you can have on your couch or bed
• Create an array of accessories like headbands, tote bags, handkerchiefs, the sky’s the limit on this one!!!

You’re in love, you know your partner is the one you want to spend the rest of your living days with and you’re ready to propose……but how to propose to your partner?

You’ve spent every day for the past however long falling deeper in love, learning traits…likes…dislikes…and everything there is to know about your partner. And through it all you have decided this is the person for you and your brimming with joy. Now how to turn all of that into a momentous proposal that will have your beau jumping for joy saying YES! 

First: Make sure you’re pretty positive they will say Yes! If your serious enough about this person to propose you should have talked with them about marriage at least a few times to know you are both on the same page and have a similar expectation of what marriage should be and of your morals and beliefs. 

Second: Pick out and purchase a ring! This also is something you should have talked with your partner about so that you understand their style, if they have any special requests, previous heirlooms they want incorporated, size (of the ring and finger) and know your personal finances and what you are willing to budget so that you’ll still be able to fund your wedding. The ring can be very important and personal to your partner, know who you’re buying this for and if they are particular. Check out previous blog “How to Pick an Engagement Ring.”

Third: Have an idea of what your future fiancé wants, is it involve family, do they want a big show or something private and intimate? If you have spoken about marriage previously there’s a good chance, they have dropped some hints or shared dream proposals with you. If you don’t already have a good idea of how you want to do it, start paying attention to places or upcoming events, trips, etc. that your beau gets excited about.

Figuring out how to buy an engagement ring, can be a scary and overwhelming experience but we’re here to give you all the tips and tricks you need so that it doesn’t have to be. Let the fun begin!!! Knowing is half the battle. Most importantly is what does your partner want in a ring, what level of importance does it hold in the grand scheme of things, and what do you want to spend. If you have made the decision that your partner is the one for you for this lifetime and that you want to propose then chances are you know them pretty well and this subject has come up before.  If you haven’t had the direct conversation of exactly what they want and you are going to surprise them make sure you are paying attention to what they like and pick up on hints.

Here are a few tips from our favorite local Jeweler Ronald Lim on how to buy an engagement ring:

·        Make a mental note of what color gold they like?

·         What shape and type of stone do they like?

·         What size is their ring finger (if they already wear a ring on that finger swipe it when you can and take it to get sized or buy/borrow a ring sizer and measure it while they are in the shower or sleeping)

·         Find a Jeweler you trust and feel comfortable with.

·         Don’t stress out too much about buying the ring. At the end of the day it’s not about the ring but about the new chapter in life the two of you are about to enter together!
